Actually learning something new, without the fluff

I’ve downloaded my fair share of learning apps over the years. Most of them promise the world but deliver a handful of shallow videos and a nagging subscription. Udemy isn’t like that. It’s more like a giant digital library where you buy individual courses—sometimes for as little as ten bucks on sale—and they stay yours forever. No ticking clock, no monthly guilt trip.

The real draw here is the sheer variety. Want to pick up Python for data analysis? There’s a course for that. Curious about AI image generation or how to actually use ChatGPT for work? Plenty of options. But it’s not just tech stuff. You’ll find courses on guitar, watercolor painting, public speaking, even how to start a podcast. Each course is made by an instructor, not a faceless company, so the teaching style varies—some are energetic, others are dry but thorough. I usually watch the free previews before buying, which has saved me from a few duds.

The app itself is straightforward. You download courses (or individual lectures) for offline viewing, which is a lifesaver on a commute or when you’re stuck somewhere without signal. The video player lets you speed up or slow down playback, and there’s a handy note-taking feature that timestamps your thoughts. One thing I appreciate: the search is decent. You can filter by level, language, price, and rating. No endless scrolling through irrelevant stuff.

It’s not perfect. The mobile interface can feel a bit cramped on a phone screen—tablets are better. And because anyone can create a course, quality isn’t guaranteed. But the rating system and student reviews usually steer you right. If you’re the kind of person who likes to learn at your own pace, without a rigid schedule, and you’re okay skipping the flashy gamification, this is a solid bet. Just wait for a sale before you buy anything. They happen every other week.
