My kid burned through an hour on this without asking for my phone back

I’ll be honest—when I first heard about Crayola Create and Play, I figured it was just another coloring app with a familiar brand slapped on top. But after watching my five-year-old niece spend a solid Saturday morning with it, I realized there’s more going on here. The app combines drawing tools, mini-games, and a few educational activities, all wrapped in that bright, no-stress Crayola style you remember from childhood. There’s no timer, no scoreboard screaming at you, just a quiet “hey, want to color a dinosaur or build a snowman?”

The drawing section is the obvious star. You get a full palette of colors—Crayola names, naturally—and tools like crayons, markers, and paint brushes. My kid started with a rainbow cat and then moved on to decorating a cupcake. What surprised me was how the app teaches little stuff without being preachy. One game asks you to match colors to objects, another has you trace letters to spell simple words. It’s not trying to replace school; it’s more like a patient older sibling showing you how things work.

There’s also a handful of mini-games that rotate. You might feed a monster the right colors or guide a character through a maze. They’re short, maybe two minutes each, which works well for short attention spans. The art gallery feature lets you save creations, and you can even print them if you’re feeling old-school. I appreciated that there’s no chat or social feed—just the kid and the screen.

Not everything is perfect. Some activities feel repetitive after a few rounds, and the app does push a subscription after the free trial. If you’re okay with that, the paid version unlocks more games and tools. For the price of a real box of crayons, it’s a fair deal.

Who’s this for? Kids up to maybe seven or eight, especially ones who already like coloring or puzzles. If your child is more into fast-paced action games, this might bore them. But for quiet play on a rainy afternoon, it’s a solid choice. One tip: let them explore on their own. The app explains itself well enough that you won’t need to hover.
