No ads, no gimmicks — just a solid number app for little kids

There’s a lot of junk in the kids’ app section. Bright colors, loud sounds, and a hundred pop-ups asking for a subscription before your toddler can even touch the screen. 123 Numbers - Count & Tracing from RV AppStudios doesn’t do that. It’s free, it’s clean, and it actually works.

The app is built around three main modes: tracing, counting, and matching. In tracing mode, kids draw over numbers with their finger — the app guides them with arrows and a little voice says the number out loud. It’s not perfect, but it’s good enough for a 3-year-old to follow. Counting mode throws up a bunch of fruit or animals and asks how many there are. Simple. Matching is a memory-style game where you pair numbers with the right quantity of objects. Each mode is short, which matters when a kid’s attention span is about 30 seconds.

What I really like is the settings menu. It’s tucked away behind a parent lock, so your kid won’t accidentally turn off the sound or buy something. You can toggle the voice language (English, Spanish, French, and a few others), adjust the difficulty, or switch between uppercase and lowercase letters if you’re also using their alphabet app. The graphics are basic — think flat, cheerful cartoons — but they’re not ugly. The animations are smooth enough that my nephew didn’t get bored after ten minutes.

There’s no story mode or characters to follow. It’s just pick a mode and play. That’s a strength for some parents and a weakness for others. If your kid needs a narrative to stay engaged, this might feel a bit dry. But if you want something straightforward that teaches the numbers 1 through 20 without distractions, this is it. The app also includes a “connect the dots” activity where you trace numbers in sequence to reveal a picture — that one surprised me with how much my niece liked it.

Best for kids around 2 to 6, especially if you’re tired of apps that beg for money every five seconds. One tip: turn on the “high contrast” option in settings if your child has trouble seeing the lines. It makes a real difference.
